Collection of paintbrushesWatercolour Challenge returns on Monday 3 September 2001 at 3.30pm, with Hannah Gordon accompanying the artists - all Watercolour Challenge Club members - to France, for a week in Provence. The series will also visit Jersey, East Kent, Pembrokeshire, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire, Fife, Buckinghamshire and the South Pennines in its search for the best amateur watercolour artists. The winners of each region will then be competing at the grand finals, to be held this series in Tuscany. And this year we also have four charity Watercolour Challenges, with celebrities and professional artists painting on behalf of their favourite charities.

Three very lucky artists, all members of the Watercolour Challenge Club, were whisked away from their homes in Britain to paint in the spectacularly beautiful Les-Baux-de Provence, a Renaissance village perched on top of a rocky crag. In Avignon, three more club members set up right in the centre of town to paint the bustling town hall square, with its pavement cafés and colourful tourists. And three more tackled a vivid and fragrant lavender field in the heart of St-Rémy-de-Provence, made famous in Van Gogh's work.

The four Charity Watercolour Challenges were all shot in Oxfordshire, with celebrities and professional artists painting on behalf of their favourite charities. Unfortunately poor Hannah caught a nasty cold during filming so Jan Frances (perhaps best known as Penny in the popular series Just Good Friends) stepped into the breach, as you will see on 1 and 2 October at 3.15pm. All the paintings from the series will be in an exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London, from 4 to 13 January 2001. Many of them are also for sale, so come early to secure your favourite.
